Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
