Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
